How much does a face painter cost in the Houston area?
If you're planning a birthday party, school carnival or company event, one of your first questions is probably the simplest: What will a face painter cost?
Many face painters won't publish their prices, which makes budgeting harder than it should be. I list mine openly, and I'll walk you through what affects the price so you can plan with confidence.
My rates
I charge by the hour, with two rates depending on your event.
Private events, including birthday parties, family gatherings and private company events:
Face painting: starting at $115 per hour
Airbrush tattoos: starting at $135 per hour
Glitter tattoos: starting at $135 per hour
Waterproof face painting: starting at $140 per hour
Festivals and community events, including events open to the public such as festivals, fairs, markets and carnivals: add $25 per hour to any service.
Why the difference? Festival painting is its own skill. Keeping a line moving means painting quickly and accurately for hours without a break, and the festival rate reflects that experience and endurance.
How many kids can be painted in an hour?
Most of my designs take 3 to 5 minutes. That means I can typically paint 12 to 20 children per hour, depending on how detailed the designs are and how quickly kids choose.
How to estimate the time you need: Divide your number of kids by about 15. For a party with 25 children, plan for about two hours. For a festival where the line never stops, book for the length of the event.
What affects the price
The service you choose. Regular face paint is the most budget-friendly option. Waterproof face paint costs more because it's built to hold up against Texas heat, sweat and long outdoor events. Airbrush and glitter tattoos fall in between and move faster for big crowds.
How long you book. Hourly pricing means your total depends on your event length. I have a two-hour minimum for private parties in the Houston area.
Where your event is. I'm based in Angleton and serve Brazoria County and Greater Houston. Events farther from Angleton may include a travel fee based on distance. My travel fee begins for anything over a 30-minute drive from 77515. I charge the IRS mileage rate of .76 a mile to and from your event.
Your date. Fall weekends, Halloween and the holiday season book up fast. Reaching out early gives you the best chance at your preferred time.
Why cheaper isn't always a bargain
A lower price can be tempting, but here's what you're paying for when you hire a professional:
Cosmetic-grade, skin-safe products, not craft paint or costume store makeup
Clean practices, including not painting over broken or irritated skin
Speed without sacrificing detail, so your line keeps moving and every child gets a turn
Insurance, which many venues, schools and companies require
Reliability, meaning someone who shows up on time, set up and ready
Your guests will remember the designs, the photos and the mirror moments long after the party ends.
