Waterproof Face Paint vs. Water-Activated Face Paint: How to Remove Both

Your child has transformed into a tiger, superhero, butterfly or sparkling creature. The event is over, bedtime is approaching and now you need to figure out how to remove the face paint.
Before reaching for a washcloth and scrubbing, find out which type of face paint was used.
Regular water-activated face paint and waterproof face paint are designed differently. They also require different removal methods.
Using the correct technique makes removal faster, more comfortable and easier on the skin.
What Is Water-Activated Face Paint?
Traditional professional face paint is usually activated with water. The artist adds a small amount of water to the paint before applying it with a brush or sponge.
Once dry, the paint can hold up well during a typical party or indoor event, but it is not designed to be completely waterproof. Heavy sweat, rain, swimming or repeated rubbing may cause it to fade or run.
The advantage is simple removal.
How to Remove Regular Face Paint
Start with:
Mild soap or facial cleanser
Warm water
A soft washcloth
A clean towel
Step 1: Create a Lather
Apply soap or cleanser directly to the painted skin with slightly damp hands.
Work the cleanser into the paint before adding a large amount of water. This helps lift the pigment instead of spreading it around the face.
Step 2: Massage Gently
Use small circular motions with your fingertips.
Do not scrub with a dry towel or rough washcloth. Children’s skin can become irritated quickly, especially around the cheeks and eyes.
Step 3: Rinse
Rinse with warm water and gently wipe away the loosened paint.
Repeat the cleansing step when necessary.
Step 4: Address Remaining Color
Some highly pigmented colors may leave a slight tint after the first wash.
Try micellar water or a gentle makeup remover appropriate for the child’s skin. You may also apply a small amount of coconut oil or another skin-safe oil before cleansing again.
Step 5: Moisturize
Pat the skin dry and apply a gentle moisturizer if the skin feels dry.
What Is Waterproof Face Paint?
Waterproof face paint is designed to withstand conditions that cause regular face paint to break down, including:
Texas heat
Sweat
Humidity
Water play
Outdoor festivals

How to Remove Body Color Cosmetics Waterproof Face Paint
Body Color Cosmetics recommends an oil-based removal process. Suitable options include coconut oil, mineral oil or baby oil.
Step 1: Apply Oil
Place a small amount of oil in your hands or on a soft cotton pad.
For easier removal, the manufacturer suggests warming the oil slightly. It should feel comfortably warm, never hot.
Step 2: Massage the Painted Area
Gently massage the oil over the design.
You should begin to see the pigment loosen and move across the skin. Do not add water yet.
Step 3: Let the Oil Sit
Allow the oil to remain on the painted skin for approximately one to two minutes.
This gives it time to break down the waterproof formula.
Step 4: Wipe Gently
Use a soft cloth, tissue or cotton pad to wipe away the loosened paint.
Avoid grinding the pigment into the skin or repeatedly scrubbing the same area.
Step 5: Repeat as Needed
A detailed or heavily pigmented design may require a second application of oil.
Continue gently until most of the color has been removed.
Step 6: Wash With Soap and Water
After the waterproof paint has been broken down and wiped away, wash the skin normally with mild soap and water.

Step 7: Moisturize
Pat the skin dry and apply a gentle moisturizer if desired.
The Most Common Removal Mistake
The biggest mistake is treating waterproof paint like regular face paint.
Water alone will not effectively break down a water-resistant cosmetic. Parents may respond by scrubbing harder, which can leave the skin red and irritated while the paint remains in place.

Should You Use Makeup Wipes?
Makeup wipes can help with small areas or leftover pigment, but they may not be the most comfortable option for removing an entire design.
Some wipes contain fragrance or ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin. They can also encourage repeated rubbing.
For waterproof Body Color Cosmetics paint, oil is generally the better first step. For regular face paint, soap and water are usually sufficient.
What About Paint Near the Eyes?
Use extra care near the eyes.
Do not allow oil, cleanser or makeup remover to run into the eye. Ask the child to keep their eyes closed and use a lightly dampened cotton pad or soft cloth rather than pouring water over the area.
When a design is close to the eyelashes, remove it slowly in small sections.
Rinse the eye with clean water if a product gets inside and causes discomfort. Seek medical advice if irritation continues.
Can Face Paint Stain the Skin?
Some strong pigments may leave temporary color behind, particularly blue, green, red or purple.
A faint tint does not mean the skin is damaged. It often fades after another gentle wash, a bath or normal skincare.
Do not repeatedly scrub the skin in an effort to remove every trace immediately. Irritation is usually more noticeable than a small amount of temporary staining.
